Pumps and Compressors

Note-This group excludes pumps and compressors designed for use on individual types of equipment, such as engine fuel pumps, aircraft propeller feathering pumps, fork lift operating pumps, compressors for operating gun turrets, and vehicular brake system compressors. Also excluded are items specially designed as or for use on fuel dispensing equipment. The FSC indexes and structure will govern the classification of these items permitted classification in a single class only.

PUMP SUBASSEMBLY,CENTRIFUGAL

Two or more different types of items having a common mounting or mounted on each other, which together form a portion of a centrifugal pump, but which in itself is not a complete functioning item and cannot be assigned a more definite item name.

PUMP SUBASSEMBLY,ROTARY

Two or more different types of items having a common mounting or mounted on each other, which together form a portion of a rotary pump, but which, in itself is not a complete functioning item and cannot be assigned a more definite item name.

EJECTOR ASSEMBLY,AIR

An assembled unit consisting of one or more jet ejectors with intercondensers and/or aftercondensers designed to maintain a partial vacuum by the removal of air and other noncondensable gases from a closed vessel without a resulting loss of vapor to the atmosphere.

PUMP,AIRLIFT

A device for pumping a liquid, utilizing the action caused by releasing compressed air or gas in the submerged end of a pipe. The air or gas aerates the liquid, causing it to become lighter by volume and is thereby forced upward in the pipe by the surrounding heavier liquid, thus producing a flow.

A mechanical device designed to convert the energy of fluid pressure to rotary motion.

IMPELLER,PUMP,CENTRIFUGAL

An item consisting of blades or paddles equally spaced around the periphery of a hub, rotor, or wheel. It is the rotating part of a PUMP, CENTRIFUGAL.

DEFLECTOR,DIRT AND LIQUID

An item so shaped as to deflect one or more of the following: dust, dirt, grease, oil, or liquid into a desired direction or away from a particular area. Can be attached to a stationary or with a revolving part.May or may notbe a mechanical device.

PUMPING ASSEMBLY,FLAMMABLE LIQUID,BULK TRANSFER

A transportable unit consisting of a pump, prime mover, and necessary accessories and attachments, designed for transferring liquid petroleum products from or to underground bulk tanks, above ground bulk tanks, railroad tank cars or military tank trucks, and to vehicular tanks or individual containers. Excludes PUMP, CENTRIFUGAL; PUMP, RECIPROCATING, DIRECT ACTING; PUMP, RECIPROCATING; and PUMP, ROTARY.

BREATHER

A mechanical device designed to permit a free flow of air into and out of an enclosure, usually used on engine crankcase, vehicular differentials and transmissions, pumps, compressors, and the like. See also CAP, VENT, FUEL STORAGE TANK. excludes VENTALATOR (as modified).

RAM,HYDRAULIC

A metal cylindrical device, used in conjunction with a hydraulic pump. Primarily designed for jacking, pressing and the like.

PUMP,LIQUID OPERATED

A device consisting of an EJECTOR, JET, operating valve, strainer and necessary piping, for installation in basements, sumps, tanks, settling basins, flywheel and elevator pits or the like, for removal of trapped liquid.

REPAIR KIT,PUMPING ASSEMBLY

A repair kit used for the maintenance of a pumping assembly.

PUMP,CENTRIFUGAL

A nonpositive displacement device which utilizes a rotating element with vanes or blades in an enclosure as a means of transferring a liquid from one place to another. It is designed to be driven by a prime mover which is not an integral part of the pump. It may be self-priming.

PUMP,AXIAL PISTONS

A positive displacement device which utilizes the reciprocating motion of a multiple number of parallel pistons arranged axially in a cylinder barrel as a means of transferring a liquid from one place to another. The pistons are actuated by revolving the cylinder barrel at an angle to the drive shaft axis or by a tilting box when the cylinder barrel revolves on the drive shaft. The piston displacement may be fixed or variable. It is designed to be driven by a prime mover which is not an integral part of the pump.

PUMP,RADIAL PISTONS

A positive displacement device which utilizes the reciprocating and rotary motion of a multiple number of pistons which are arranged radially around a drive shaft as a means of transferring a liquid from one place to another. The piston displacement may be fixed or variable. It is designed to be driven by a prime mover which is not an integral part of the pump.

PUMP,RECIPROCATING,DIRECT ACTING

A positive displacement device which utilizes the reciprocating motion of a piston or plunger in an enclosure, directly connected to a steam activated power piston and operating as a unit independent of any crank movement, as a means of transferring a liquid from one place to another.

PUMP UNIT,CENTRIFUGAL-ROTARY

An assembled unit consisting of a commonly mounted centrifugal pump, rotary pump, a prime mover, and the necessary components to provide for a complete operation.

CYLINDER SLEEVE

A tubular metal item designed primarily as a replaceable wear surface within the cylinder bore of a piston type internal combustion engine, compressor, or reciprocating pump.

GOVERNOR,PUMP,PRESSURE REGULATING

A governor specifically designed to regulate the discharge pressure of reciprocating or turbine driven pumps. It may be actuated by either the pump discharge fluid or air flow from an external pilot valve.

PUMP,DEFLATING,MANUAL

EJECTOR,JET

A device having pressure inlet(s), discharge outlet(s), and suction inlet(s) designed to move fluids or solids by utilizing the kinetic energy of a fluid forced at a high velocity through a converging nozzle(s). The item must not contain any valve(s), float(s), or pipe(s), but may contain an integral ball check(s). Excludes items designed exclusively for circulating free air. See also PUMP, LIQUID OPERATED.

PUMP,INFLATING-DEFLATING,HAND OPERATED

A single cylinder pumping device designed to inflate or deflate pneumatic equipment such as life rafts, service boats, mattresses, etc. May be foot held or hand held while operating.

PUMP UNIT,CENTRIFUGAL-VACUUM,POWER DRIVEN

An assembled unit, on a common mounting, consisting of a centrifugal pump and one or more vacuum pumps coupled directly or indirectly to a single prime mover; it must have a lifting bail and is designed for well point pumping.

PUMP UNIT,CENTRIFUGAL

An assembled unit consisting of a commonly mounted centrifugal pump(s), prime mover(s), and the necessary components to provide for a complete operation.

PUMP,HYDRAULIC RAM,HAND DRIVEN

A positive displacement pump designed to utilize the reciprocating motion of a single piston as a means for providing hydraulic pressure. A manual control may be provided for varying the pressure delivered. Excludes JACK HYDRAULIC, HAND.

PUMP UNIT,ROTARY

An assembled unit consisting of a commonly mounted rotary pump(s), prime mover(s), and the necessary components to provide for a complete operation.

COLUMN ASSEMBLY,DEEP WELL PUMP

Consists of section(s), of steel pipe with spider type bearing retainers, steel pump shafting, shaft couplings and pipe end couplings. Used for deep well pumpcasing.

WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM,AUTOMATIC

An operating assembly designed to store and deliver water under pressure. It automatically raises water as needed, to replenish the supply and maintain the pressure against intermittent use. It consists essentially of a TANK, PRESSURE; SWITCH, PRESSURE; pump; prime mover; check valve; air volume control valve and necessary piping connections.

WATER DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT

A collection of items including pump, power source, hose, fittings, etc., basically used for the transfer of purified water over short distances.

PUMPING ASSEMBLY,DEEP WELL

A device consisting of a power unit, column, and pumping element for removing liquids form wells of depths exceeding 25 feet (7.620 meters). Includes turbine type pumping element consisting of impeller(s) connected to a common shaft revolving within fixed bowl(s), or helical-rotor type pumping element consisting of a vertical helically-countoured rotor revolving within a hellically-contoured strator. RING,WEARING

A cylindrical item with or without flange(s), designed to be inserted in a pump casing or secured to the impeller of a centrifugal pump. It is used for the purpose of providing a close running clearance between the impeller and casing in order to prevent or overcome leakage due to erosion. It may also be used as a diffuser ring in the suction and discharge throats of valves.

An assembled unit consisting of a commonly mounted axial piston pump(s), prime mover(s), and the necessary components to provide for a complete operation.

SEAL ASSEMBLY,SHAFT,SPRING LOADED

A combination of items used in sealing various rotary shaft equipment. It may include items such as bellows, disk, drive ring, flexible diaphragm, mating ring, o-ring, retainer, seat, sleeve, washer and the like. Excludes SEAL, PLAIN ENCASED.

HOUSING,LIQUID PUMP

A casted end cover which keeps oil from leaking out of one end of the cooler tube.

HOUSING SECTION,LIQUID PUMP

A partial enclosure which covers and protects selected internal components of a PUMP, (as modified). This item may function as the impeller casing, rotor housing, pump end cover, or the like. It may also include the intake and/or outlet port(s). For complete housings, see HOUSING, LIQUID PUMP or HOUSING, MOTOR-PUMP, HYDRAULIC. CONNECTING ROD,PISTON

A device used for connecting a piston to a crankshaft or to a master connecting rod of an internal combustion engine, steam reciprocating engine, reciprocating air compressor, or the like. The rod may be connected directly to the piston, or it may transmit the motion through a crosshead.

CYLINDER SLEEVE AND PISTON ASSEMBLY

A CYLINDER SLEEVE and PISTON (1), (as modified) with one or more of the following: piston pin, piston ring, gaskets and/or seals, grouped as a single unit and intended for one time replacement in the repair of engines, compressors, pumps, and the like.

PISTON,PUMP

RING,LANTERN

An item of single or multipiece construction, circular in shape and usually of H-shape cross section, designed for insertion between packing rings on pump shafts. The web of the ring is perforated to permit flow of liquid to the shaft and packing for sealing, cooling and lubricating purposes.

SLEEVE,SHAFT,PUMP

A tubular shaped metallic item designed to provide a replaceable wearing surface for a centrifugal pump shaft. See also BEARING, SLEEVE; BUSHING, SLEEVE; and SPACER, SLEEVE.

CONNECTOR,FLUID,PUMP

An item with a threaded or unthreaded tube, pipe, or hose connection on one end and a mounting facility, such as a flange on the opposite end. It is designed for a pump to provide an inlet or outlet connection to a system fluid line. The item may be straight or angular. Excludes HEAD, HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP and VALVE HEAD, HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP.

GEAR ROTOR SET,ROTARY PUMP

A pump rotor or impeller consisting of two gears, the outer gear having internal teeth (lobes) and the inner gear having external teeth (lobes). The inner gear has one or two teeth less than the outer gear, and is mounted to mesh eccentric with the outer gear. The space between the teeth of the two meshing gears creates a positive displacement of fluids from the inlet port to the outlet port of the rotary pump.

HEAD,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

An item which serves the dual purpose of closing the housing of a hydraulic pump or motor and of providing external port connection(s). It has no internal ports. For heads with integral valve plates, see VALVE HEAD, HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP.

VALVE PLATE,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

A rigid item of various shapes, with a centrally located aperture designed with internal ports. It may have provisions for mounting. It must have a machined flat surface with internal parts of a pump or motor. For items with external ports, see VALVE HEAD, HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP.

VALVE HEAD,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

A rigid item of various shapes. The internal surface is machined and ported to form part of the valve. The external surface contains the ports. It has provisions for attachment to the housing of a pump or motor. See also VALVE PLATE, HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP.

CYLINDER BLOCK,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

A basically cylindrical item with radial or axial cylinder bores equidistant from each other and from the shaft axis. It is designed to house the pistons of a radial or axial pistons motor or pump.

CYLINDER BLOCK UNIT,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

An item consisting of the cylinder block and matching pistons, of a radial or axial pistons type motor or pump. It may include bearings, shaft, and the like.

YOKE,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

An item which adjusts the angle of a rotating cylinder in relation to the drive shaft axis, or adjusts the angle of a piston driving cam in a variable delivery axial pistons pump or a variable displacement hydraulic motor, thus increasing or decreasing piston stroke with a corresponding change in rate of fluid flow.

PISTON,HYDRAULIC MOTOR-PUMP

The rear part of a PUMP, CENTRIFUGAL which supports and maintains the mechanical seal or the gland packing.

BODY SECTION,PUMP,CENTRIFUGAL

An item which consists in a integral part of a PUMP,CENTRIFUGAL which joins the pump housing to the pump power axle.

PUMP,EDDY EFFECT

An energy-generating rotor attached to the end of a drive shaft and placed within a volute. When engaged, it creates a peripheral "eddy" effect which forces agitated material into a discharge pipe.

ACCESSORY KIT,HYDRAULIC RAM

A group of accessory items for use with a RAM,HYDRAULIC. May or may not be contained in a case for storage or transportation.

SHAFT SET,ROTARY PUMP

A set consisting of two shafts, which together form a postion of a rotary pump. The set may contain additional components such as screws, keys, washers, sleeves and the like.

PAD,HYDRAULIC RAM

An item, usually metallic, of various shapes and sizes, that protects the jacking ends of a hydraulic cylinder and provides a secure grip on the pieces to be jacked. The jacking surface may be polished, have a textured gripping surface, or have a vee or cross shape.

PARTS KIT,WATER DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT

A parts kit used to repair WATER DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT.

PUMP,DOSING,LIQUID OPERATED

A positive displacement device which uses the reciprocating motion of one or more pistons or plungers, as a means of transferring, dosing and mixing a solution, water (or another liquid) and concentrate. It is designed to be driven by the pressure of the liquid, but does not include an EJECTOR, JET. Ecludes PUMP, RECIPROCATING.

INSTALLATION KIT,PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS

A collection of items which is designed to install pumps and compressors.

FRAME,MOUNTING,PUMP

An assembly of brackets, plates, braces, and the like used to support, but does not include, a pump or pump assembly. May be free standing or mounted within another assembly or structure.

PUMP,INFLATING-DEFLATING,POWER OPERATED

A motorized pump designed to inflate or deflate pneumatic equipment such as LIFE RAFT, INFLATABLE&#59; MATTRESS, PNEUMATIC&#59; SHELTER, INFLATABLE, TRANSPORTABLE and the like.

RING,CAM

A ring-like item with elliptic chambers of cams and the like on the interior surface to provide a continuous contact with cam followers like the plungers and or the pistons. The item has the capability to be a functional part of both a radial piston hydraulic motor and a radial piston hydraulic pump, or the like.

FILTER UNIT,FLUID,PRESSURE

A machine designed to remove foreign particles and/or impurities from a fluid which is passed through an element of porous material or thin closely spaced disks. It includes a source of power and a circulating pump for forcing the fluid through the system under pressure.

SEPARATOR,OIL

An enclosed tank or vessel specifically designed to remove harmful solids, insoluble sludge and water by the force of gravity from continuous flow of contaminated oil. Exclude settling tanks.

PURIFIER,CENTRIFUGAL,OIL

A mechanical device containing a cylindrical vessel or bowl which rotates on its axis at a high rate of speed. Contaminated oil is injected under pressure and by means of centrifugal force the harmful solids, insoluble sludge and water are removed.

SEPARATOR,WATER,LIQUID FUEL

A self-contained unit designed to remove water from liquid fuel products. It usually consists of a tank with a removable head, inlet and outlet connections, water accumulator sump(s), water separating media, and necessary controls. Excludes FILTER-SEPARATOR, LIQUID FUEL.

STRAINER ASSEMBLY,DIESEL FUEL OIL

A group of related items consisting of a double compartmented steel shell, gages and interconnecting piping. The shell contains metallic strainer elements equipped with cleaning device, inlet and outlet connection(s). The assembly is used to remove solid contaminates from diesel fuel oil, prior to a filtering process, in a bulk fuel clarification system. Excludes STRAINER, SEDIMENT.

A rigid item of various shapes designed as a component of a fluid filter, acting as the cover and retaining the filter element in place. The item does not have an inlet or outlet connection. HEAD,FLUID FILTER

A component of a fluid filter designed to contain the inlet and/or outlet ports of the filter. It acts as a cover and attaches to the fluid filter body or mounts directly to an integral cavity in an engine, manifold, casing, or the like. The item may include relief, check, by-pass valves, and/or fluid filter element(s). It may have means for supporting the filter element(s), and means for mounting the filter. An item of various shapes which can be removed from the compressor housing for the purpose of repair and inspection of internal components. The item is usually self-sealing, preventing damage from external pollutants such as dust and moisture.

A flat or curved item designed to be mounted on the rotor of a vacuum pump. The vanes direct the air flow through the vacuum pump and create or maintain the desired pressure and flow capacity.

CONNECTING ROD,PISTON

A device used for connecting a piston to a crankshaft or to a master connecting rod of an internal combustion engine, steam reciprocating engine, reciprocating air compressor, or the like. The rod may be connected directly to the piston, or it may transmit the motion through a crosshead.

A CYLINDER SLEEVE and PISTON (1), (as modified) with one or more of the following: piston pin, piston ring, gaskets and/or seals, grouped as a single unit and intended for one time replacement in the repair of engines, compressors, pumps, and the like.

An item designed to unload a compressed gas from a unit to another containers under an upper pressure. It allows a quick loading of breathing or industrial apparatus. Excludes: COMPRESSOR UNIT, RECIPROCATING
